Badly Drawn Boy – I Saw You Walk Away

Badly Drawn Boy – I Saw You Walk Away

It´s been a while since I listened to Badly Drawn Boy; in fact, I´ll be honest, it´s been forever. Damon Gough has been a busy bloke since One Plus One is One graced my car stereo, but I never felt that compelled to pick up his stuff, and on a listen to his latest single, it´s tricky not to feel that I have made the right choice.

I Saw You Walk Away follows the BDB trend – a smooth acoustic track with a hint of simple strings and a wishy-washy vocal strung over the top. The problem is, it doesn’t seem to do anything new, but instead floats along Goughs well-worn track of insipid normality. It´s basically shopping center music – nice and lilty in the background, but really failing to ignite enough spark to stick in your mind by the time you reach your car.

I have to stress, it´s not actually a bad song, merely completely forgettable, and falling prey to sounding like a lot of strummy indie music, of which there has been an excess in recent years. A shame too, as Gough has proven he has the talent to create a great song – I´m just wondering if he has run out of inspiration.
