Canadian music television station MuchMusic announced nominations for its 2009 video awards today (May 27), with Canadian rockers Nickelback and pop singer Danny Fernandes leading the way.

Nickelback received five nominations, tying with Danny Fernandes for the most award nominations, followed closely by Vancouver punk band Marianas Trench, who garnered four. Other nominees include rapper Classified, art-rockers Midway State, singer/songwriter Lights and hip-hop artist k-os.

The show airs live on June 21 and is being hosted by the Jonas Brothers, with performances by Lady Gaga and others.

Nickelback Dominates Canada's Juno Awards

Alberta rockers Nickelback dominated the Junos, Canada’s music awards, on Sunday night as they won trophies for group of the year and album of the year for “Dark Horses” and the fan choice award.

Nickelback led all comers with five nominations going into the 38th edition of the Junos, which were handed out in Vancouver and broadcast on CTV.

Montreal rocker Sam Roberts picked up the Juno for artist of the year, while Toronto hip-hop artist Kardinal Offishall earned a trophy for best rap recording of the year, to add to the Juno for best single of the year he won Saturday night for “Dangerous.”

And songstress Lights grabbed the Juno for best new artist of the year.

Also on Saturday night, Montreal indie rockers the Stills grabbed pre-telecast Junos for best alternative album of the year and new group of the year.

Alanis Morissette earned best pop album honors for “Flavors of Entanglement,” while British rockers Coldplay won for best international album of the year for “Viva La Vida.”

Coldplay beat out AC/DC, Guns N’ Roses, Jack Johnson and Metallica for best international album of the year, the only Juno category open to non-Canadian acts and based on domestic music sales.

Nickelback - I'd Come For You

Nickelback - I’d Come For You – I feel like I’ve reviewed half of Nickelback’s latest CD, “Dark Horse” but that’s because I’m getting promo’s for every song. I have no clue which of the three recent reviews will be the next single, but I’d say this is the worst of the three (Something In Your Mouth, and If Today Was Your Last Day are the other two). This track starts off a little slow, but picks it up towards the end. Still a decent track. 7/10

Canadian rock group Nickelback led the musical pack Tuesday, picking up five nominations for the 38th annual Juno Awards, Canada’s top music honors.

The Alberta rockers received nominations for best single, best group, best producer and best album of the year.

Nickelback also will compete for the Juno fan choice award against Celine Dion and Hedley — both of whom secured three nominations each — plus Feist and the Lost Fingers.

Other multiple nominees unveiled Tuesday at a Toronto press conference include Montreal-based Sam Roberts, who earned four nominations including best artist of the year.

The international album of the year award, based on retail album sales in Canada, will see AC/DC’s “Black Ice” and Coldplay’s “Viva La Vida” go up against Metallica’s “Death Magnetic,” Jack Johnson’s “Sleep Through the Static” and Guns N’ Roses’ “Chinese Democracy.”

The 2009 Juno Awards will air live March 29 on CTV from Vancouver.

Nickelback - Dark Horse

“Despite the claim that you should bet horses and not houses, we’re wagering the farm that “Dark Horse” will cross the same multiplatinum finish line as champion predecessor “All the Right Reasons.” The reason? The bulletproof Nickelback provides affordable fun that promises good returns in hard times. Yes, entrees are cooked to order for radio (buoyant “Gotta Be Somebody,” “I’ll Come for You”). The quartet gets its hands dirty though with guitar solos, heavier chops and double-entendres. It hails the party life (”Burn It to the Ground,” good-time anthem “This Afternoon”) but condemns it when it goes too far (horror tale “Just to Get High”). “Something in Your Mouth” and “Shaking Hands” sketch women who use sex to get ahead, not that the band minds (”S.E.X.,” “Next Go Round”). Saddle up tight for another long Nickelback run. —Christa L. Titus”

Exclusive: Nickelback Talks New Album

Chad Kroeger laughs when asked if the phenomenal sales for 2005’s “All the Right Reasons” gave confidence to Nickelback as it set out to make its sixth studio album, “Dark Horse.”

“No, because look what we have to try to live up to,” says Kroeger, who co-founded the quartet in 1995 in Alberta, Canada. “There’s a mountain sitting behind us. We’ve got to try and put something out now that’s going to stand up to that. So for us, the bar has been raised ridiculously high.”

“Dark Horse,” which comes out Nov. 18 on Roadrunner and was co-produced by Mutt Lange, certainly has a target to clear. Buoyed by seven multiformat hit singles and five No. 1 videos-and apparently unaffected by widespread critical drubbing-”All the Right Reasons” has sold 10 million copies worldwide, according to Roadrunner, and spent a staggering 110 consecutive weeks in the top 30 of the Billboard 200. It fell off the chart Oct. 11 after a 156-week run, the longest registered in 11 years.

“All the Right Reasons” also took off in a big way this summer in Europe, meaning Kroeger and his bandmates-brother and bassist Mike Kroeger, guitarist Ryan Peake and drummer Daniel Adair-were multitasking across two continents as they recorded “Dark Horse” and promoted its predecessor.

“We’ve never left the previous album cycle,” Roadrunner president Jonas Nachsin says. “That’s got to be a seriously positive sign going into a new one. It’s become such a monster to try to put our arms around, we’re just doing the best we can to guide it into fruition at this point.”

In his first interview about the new album, Kroeger — who started working with Lange (”The dude is my hero,” he says) on “Dark Horse” in March in Switzerland — acknowledges that he “would’ve liked a longer break” for himself. But he also recognized it was time for more Nickelback music in the marketplace.

“If you’re a fan of the band and you went out and got ‘All the Right Reasons’ the first week it was released, you’d be waiting for new material for, like, three years now,” Kroeger says. “So it was definitely time for us to make sure that we had a new album and some new songs for the fans.”
